Press Club’s Answer To Economic Austerity

Two Keith's Event

06 September 2010

Birmingham Press Club has come up with an ideal riposte to the grim austerity imposed on the country in a bid to pay off the UK’s debt mountain.

The answer, says the oldest press club in the world, is to forget about it all and go for a long lunch.

And not just any old lunch – it should be a lunch to remember, in the style of two of the greatest bon viveurs of recent times, Keith Floyd and Keith Waterhouse, both of whom adopted a ‘congenial’ approach to work.

Neither would have relished austerity – which is why the Press Club has decided to cast aside sombreness for the day and embrace excess.

And that adds up to an eye-watering feast at Birmingham’s aptly named Hotel du Vin on the 01 October 2010, with posh nosh and fine wine – and the chance to hobnob with like-minded folk for a pleasant hour or two (or three).

The menu for the day will be potted slow roast Scottish salmon with soft herbs and caper berries, walnut and raisin toast, to be followed by roast grouse, game chips and bread sauce.

To finish, there will be apple pie and perry jelly – it’s a feast that Floyd would certainly have been proud of.

And that’s not all – during lunch there will be a sumptuous wine tasting, hosted by Ian Harvey, of The Wine Tasting Company, who is also sponsoring the event.

Press Club chairman John Lamb said: “This lunch will be the perfect antidote to the austerity which has settled over the economy.

“Floyd and Waterhouse would have loved it and they will be with us at the lunch in spirit – or, more accurately, in the form of the two lifesize cardboard cutouts you see here!”

The event will take place at Hotel du Vin, Church Street, Birmingham, on 1 October. For further information visit www.pressclubtickets.co.uk
