Press Club Backs 2010 Poppy Appeal

26 October 2010

Birmingham Press Club is backing the Royal British Legion's 2010 Poppy Appeal.

Press Club members attending the October ‘First Thursday’ event at the Old Royal were encouraged to don poppies to show their support for the annual appeal, which is helping raise money for the injured and bereaved of the British Armed Forces serving in Afghanistan.

The Poppy Appeal is to be formally launched by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham at 11am in Victoria Square this Saturday (30 October).

Mike Sharpe, of the Royal British Legion, said: “We are hoping to raise £1 million in Birmingham this year.  Despite the current economic times, we trust the people of Birmingham will show their sympathy and support for those who have sacrificed so much on behalf of their country."

The Legion currently spends more than £1.4 million a week in its work, helping dependents and veterans.
