West Midlands Media Awards 2006

More than 300 guests attended the Royal Mail-sponsored Birmingham Press Club fourth Midlands Media Awards at the Botanical Gardens, Edgbaston, last Thursday (12 October).

The Sunday Mercury's Jeannette Oldham carried off two top awards: ÔNews Reporter of the Year (daily) and 'Scoop of the Year', and colleague Adam Aspinall was named 'Newcomer of the Year'.

'Newspaper of the Year' was won by the Stoke-based Sentinel Sunday. Runner up was the 'Birmingham Post'.

Other winners were Paul Webb (Hinckley Times): 'Headline of the Year'; Liz Gray (Shrewsbury Chronicle): 'News Reporter of the Year (weekly)'; Richard Eaton (Worcester News): News Photographer of the Year'; Dominic Lipinski (Nottingham Evening Post) 'Trevor Roberts Award'; Trevor Roberts (Birmingham Mail): 'Sports Photographer of the Year'; Jeremy Clay (Leicester Mercury) 'Feature Writer of the Year'; Brian Dick (Birmingham Post) 'Sports Journalist of the Year'; Jon Griffin (Birmingham Mail) 'Business Journalist of the Year'. The Shropshire Magazine won 'Magazine of the Year'.

Sponsors included: The Royal Mail (Birmingham Press Club's overall sponsor for 2006/7); British Airways; Aston Science Park; South Birmingham College; and New Street Gateway Project.
