It will be a fight to the finish for contenders hoping to win the new categories of Radio Journalist of the Year and Television Journalist of the Year at this year’s Midlands Media Awards.

Birmingham Press Club, the oldest press club in the world, has introduced the two new categories to find the region’s best broadcast journalists.

As in previous years the gloves will be off on 6 June when journalists from all sectors of the media will do battle at the ICC in Birmingham city centre.

There are 16 award categories in total: newspaper of the year; scoop of the year; headline of the year; magazine of the year; radio journalist of the year; television journalist of the year; regional photographer of the year; sports photographer of the year; weekly photographer of the year; sports journalist of the year; news reporter of the year (daily); news reporter of the year (weekly); newcomer of the year; business journalist of the year; feature writer of the year and the Trevor Roberts award, which is aimed at upcoming photographers.

John Lamb, chairman of Birmingham Press Club, said: “This awards scheme recognises and rewards boxing-clever journalists in the Midlands.

“Every year we receive hundreds of entries and the awards ceremony is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the media calendar.

“It will be interesting to see which journalists manage to knock out the competition and walk away with a title in June.”

A number of leading companies are being lined up to back the event, which is being underpinned by the Press Club’s overall sponsor, Royal Mail.

Other sponsors supporting the awards include Birmingham Airport, Capita, Nikon and Advantage West Midlands.
